Creating engaging patient experience leveraging Patient Education.

Today we are back with a topic on creation of engaging patient experience using digital health strategies. As we all know patient engagement is the most important pillar of an effective patient experience, patient education plays a significant role in patient centric care and positive outcomes. Moreover, Digital Health has a significant role to play in creating an engaging patient experience. Some of the important factors that helps in building an engaging experience and creation of better adherence of treatment protocols are covered below:

Patient Engagement Planning: Build a patient engagement plan and share with the patient. This shall allow patients to collaborate and engage right from the start and throughout the journey.

Automatic Reminders: Patient shall be given reminders to increase adherence to medication and treatments  

Patient Centric Workflow: Building a patient centric workflow that allows patients to participate in their decision making plays a crucial role in increasing patient satisfaction and enhancing patient outcomes

Capturing Patient Conditions: Even before patient visits the clinician, patient shall get the ability to share the information about their current conditions, any past medical history, previous discharge summaries, any existing prescriptions

Giving relevant information about a symptom: An important aspect of patient education is around sharing relevant information about a symptom. A symptom checker can play a great role in informing the patient about certain conditions and giving alerts to patient about a doctors visit that is important

Notifying Primary Care Physicians: A PCP or a family doctor plays a big role in identifying the seriousness of the patient condition. Hence triggering notification to doctors of an alarming situation will play a significant role. Making a callout to the PCP from a click of an alert will help

Patient Recommendations and Consent: Building an ability to capture patient recommendation in decision making when a clinician provides choice to patient is an important function that shouldn’t be ignored. Similarly, taking a consent is a legal requirement before a procedure is implemented.

Measuring Patient experience: Patient experience shall be captured and measured throughout the course of the treatment against a weighted average. Whether it’s a regular follow-up or a handover from Primary care physician to rehab centers, discharge documentation shall include everything 

Patient Portal: Finally, a patient portal is all that we definitely need for keeping all information for the patient in one place. The data collected from different patients can be leveraged to create a historical analysis of similar patient care journey and   

Patient Surveys: Patient surveys are important and much needed tool to capture the feedback from the patient. If we are designing a patient education platform, one must include a way to periodically capture the patient sentiments and behaviors
